Don't forget that clicking the Right Mouse button will edit an
object. In addition, clicking the Right Mouse Button in any menu
selection exits the menu (Esc also works). This is the quickest
way to navigate the menus!!

1. Machine Requirements / VESA video BIOS
──────────────────────────────────────
a. A 386 and above although a 486DX/33 is recommended.
b. A math co-processor is highly recommended. Speeds up DeePBSP about 4X.
c. A VGA monitor.
d. A video board with 512Kb. There are 13 different video boards
supported. Use VESA first. Try the others if your board is listed to
improve performance in some cases (e.g. ET4000 has a slow VESA).
If you don't have a VESA board or other problems, UNIVBE may work
(see below).
e. 512kb free memory and a minimum of 6MB extended, although 8MB is
recommended (see Virtual memory below).
Do NOT use expanded memory with EMM386, use the NOEMS option.
f. HIMEM.SYS loaded in CONFIG.SYS.
g. FILES=20 or higher in CONFIG.SYS.
h. Approximately 2.8 MB of disk space + 4 MB for a swap file.
i. Enough additional disk space to save DOOM/HERETIC/HEXEN/STRIFE
levels you make.
j. A mouse (keyboard is a lot harder and some features are mouse only).
k. DOS 6.2 is optional, but again makes everything else easier.
l. Either a PATH= to your COMMAND.COM or a SHELL= in CONFIG.SYS.
m. If you can, Shadow the Video and System BIOS. DOOM just tells you not
to, for the reasons listed below (shadowing exaggerates the problems).
n. Overview of system considerations:
DeeP and DeePBSP stress the DRAM refresh setting more than many programs.
If you have problems with the video, check the wait states on your DRAM.
If they are set too low, you will experience "lockups" or strange
symptoms. (Windows should also be GP faulting a lot and HERETIC behaves
erratically.)
There is no "normal" system out there, but be careful if you have
a ZERO wait setting and your memory is 70ns or higher. Some 60ns chips
also do not work (on a 33Mhz system), depending on the DRAM and the board.
We have not found "ram" check programs that bring out these flaws. Every-
thing looks fine and stuff may even appear to work for a while. But if
your system likes to act up at random, take a second look at the settings.
Any system that has a "tweaked" speed (someone upped the clock speed) is
asking for trouble.
Use a small Smartdrv if you have enough memory. It helps speed up help,
reading / saving files and the display of floor and ceiling textures.
The suggested size of Smartdrv is 256-512kb if you have texture caching
turned on. 8mb systems are border line with texture caching on and can
run out of memory. Look at the bottom of the display to see how much
memory you are using. The maximum amount is used when you turn texture
caching on and do a full texture browse. Do a screen scroll and enter
a few menus. If you have 2mb left after doing that, you are in good
shape.
DOOM works fine (in fact loads much faster) with Smartdrv (latest
Smartdrv anyway), but your system has to have at least 8MB. Smartdrive
takes extended memory away from the DeeP, so if you run out of memory,
please reduce the size of the Smartdrive cache.
If your system acts up with Smartdrive, then of course do not use it.
DOS 6.2x or DOS 7 is recommended.
Use HIMEM.SYS and load DOS high (OK to do with DOOM.)
Normally we suggest selecting the VESA driver the first time, unless
you spot your card on the list.
The minimum video board has to have 512Kb of memory (more memory is OK).
The SVGA options tries to detect if you have a video board that supports
256 colors. This is not VESA and may lock up when you try it.
Some older boards are not VESA compatible, but they are SVGA with
512kb or more. In other cases, the VESA BIOS does not work correctly
(ATI is one). VESA software drivers that you can load anytime may solve
your problems.
UNIVBE is such a driver and will probably work and be fast to boot.
This driver is available from SBS and from many FTP sites.
This product is NOT made by SBS, but SciTech Software. Unzip the file
UVBE50BD.ZIP in the same directory as DeeP (or another if you like).
UVBE51BD.ZIP is a new version with lots of extra stuff, but is too large
to include.
Its available from ftp.scitechsoft.com or http://www.scitechsoft.com.
Follow the instructions given, but they are fairly simple.
Enter > UNIVBE /? to get a list of the options.
For most, entering " > UNIVBE -l " works. This loads the driver high
and autodetects your board.
Even for VESA boards, this program may speed up your video for all your
applications (DOOM works ok with it.)
If you can play DOOM reliably, you will probably be able to run DeeP.
2. Installation
──────────────────────────────────────
a. DeePxxxS.ZIP is the shareware zipped distribution files for DeeP.
b. DeePREG.ZIP is the zipped registered distribution file for DeeP.
c .DeePFILE.ZIP contains the zipped support files for registered DeeP.
d. UVBE50BD.ZIP contains the zipped files for UNIVESA.
Use PKUNZIP (2.04 or later) to unzip the above into any directory on your
hard drive. PKUNZIP is available from many sources, probably including
the one you obtained DeeP from. (Now this was probably in a zipped file
so you already know how to do this, right?)
The name is for illustration, this is just one way to do it!

3. Virtual Memory
──────────────────────────────────────
Although 8mb of memory is recommended to run DeeP, it is possible to
have less memory using virtual memory. This method is similar to
Windows. It uses a disk swap file for paging out unused memory, thus
freeing real memory.
Virtual memory is -much- slower when paging occurs. If you have a lot
of disk activity, your system is using virtual memory. Believe me
you'll be able to tell. So although this allows DeeP to run on a
4mb system, 8mb is really recommended.
The first time DeeP is run it creates a swap file for you. The default
size is 4mb. Edit the file VIRTUAL.BAT to change the value.
The SET DMPI=SWAPFILE statement in DEEP.BAT defines the location of
the swap file. Change this statement if you place the swap file
somewhere else (recommended if you have multiple drives).
Make sure your environment size is large enough to contain the SET
variable information (use HELP COMMAND in DOS for more information).
Example CONFIG.SYS :
shell=c:\dos\command.com c:\dos\ /e:1024 /p
Modify DEEP.BAT and delete the lines shown in DEEP.BAT for NO swap file.
For systems with 8mb of memory or less, ALWAYS reduce your SMARTDRV
cache to 512kb. Just find SMARTDRV in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and type
512 at the end. Type HELP SMARTDRV (in DOS) for more information.
8mb or less systems should not use the Texture Caching option. It is
best to not use the swap file, this is much slower than letting DeeP
reread the textures.
Remember, the swap file is optional. If you have 16mb we suggest you
modify DEEP.BAT to not allocate a swap file. Delete DEEP.SWP to
reclaim any disk space.
4. How to start DeeP
──────────────────────────────────────
DeeP is started by typing: DeeP <command line options>
The first time you type DeeP, a virtual swap file is created (see above).
Then DeeP starts and you are prompted for the type of video
driver desired. If you don't know, start with VESA. To reset the
driver, type DeeP -D NEW to select a new driver.
The initial video resolution is 800x600. You can change this within
the program at any time. You can also change the resolution at load time
by typing DeeP -V #, where # is from 1 to 4 (1=640x480, 2=800x600,
etc.)
The file ~DEEP.WAD is created when you rebuild Nodes from DeeP.
~DEEP.WAD contains a copy of your last saved level. You can
use this to restore (use COPY) in case something goes wrong with the node
building.
You will get the message level "YOUR.WAD" (whatever you called it) not
found.
This message also appears if you attempt to save a level, but it did not
successfully save.
Typical reasons are:
1) You ran out of memory (reduce Smartdrv cache, turn of texture cache)
2) You ran out of disk space.
3) FAT errors?
4) Errors caused by DOOM/HERETIC/HEXEN/STRIFE from playing a level with
errors.
5) You bypassed the DEEP.BAT file using your own batch file and forgot
to make it work the same. The batch files have to be constructed as
distributed!
When running from DeeP, the message will flash and you won't be able to
tell what happened. But you never see the DeePBSP screen come up. That's
your first clue that something is amiss.
Then you might want to use the temporary file (or use the one named .BAK,
although the .BAK is prior to your changes).
Use the DOS COPY command to copy the file back to the original name.
>>> !! CAUTION !! <<
DO NOT USE the ~DEEP.WAD as direct input. Copy it and give it
a different name if you want to use it again. DeeP won't let you read
these files!
5. Command line options
──────────────────────────────────────
The command line options are explained in DeeP by entering the H (help)
usage command. Enter ? to see all the Help.
6. The DeeP.CHK, Project (.PRJ) and Texture (.TCF) Files
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The DeeP.CHK file contain the status of your options and settings for the
the last project active, the xxxxx.PRJ file. ("xxxxx" varies according to
the game selected or names you have created yourself. See online help
for more information.)
The xxxx.PRJ defines the IWAD and default texture name xxxxx.TCF. "xxxx"
varies according to the game selected just like xxxx.PRJ.
The xxxx.TCF defines a set of default textures to use.
If you mess up the settings, delete DEEP.CHK to restore all files to the
defaults. It is possible for this file to get corrupted due to "normal"
DOS FAT table allocation errors. We suggest you delete the file and start
over when any FAT error for this file is reported. Inexplicable behavior
can sometimes be traced to corrupted .CHK, .PRJ or .TCF files.
The largest complete path name for any file is 42 characters!
This includes the drive specification "C:\".
The largest default path (either explicit or implied by the directory you
are in) is 27 characters.
For example: C:\DOOM2\WADS\TESTLVL.WAD is 25 characters long.
The default path is always added to any file you read or write,
so don't forget to count it.
7. The DeeP Main Menu
──────────────────────────────────────
DeeP has online documentation to help you run it. Type "?" and press enter.
This brings up a help screen that explains what each option does in full
detail. The complete documentation is listed here as well as in Edit,
under "All Help".
In Map edit mode, F1 brings up more help and even more help for the
menu items on the top bar!
You can print the documentation by selecting the Print button.
8. DeeP Map Level Editor
──────────────────────────────────────
The submenus are activated by left clicking the mouse on the top menu
bar or by press Alt+the first character underlined of one of the top names
displayed. For example, Alt+F is the File menu.
The map editor is an editor of the level. Select the level from the
menu displayed when Edit level is selected from the File menu. This
brings up a map of the level you have chosen to edit, for example,
MAP10 (DOOM II and HEXEN) or E2M3 (DOOM and HERETIC).
Set all the options in the Edit pull-down menu to automatically restart,
set colors and other working defaults.
The editor has Four Editing Modes. In each edit mode you can Add, Delete
or Change the type of object selected.
The four main editing modes are:
a. Sector Mode
b. Vertices Mode
c. Thing Edit Modes
d. Linedef and Sidedef Modes
In addition there are four Tool editing modes:
a. Line drawing mode
b. Rectangle mode
c. Polygon mode
d. Stair mode
The online help has explanations for each of these functions.
Registered DeeP contains the latest explanations of these functions.
9. The Commands
──────────────────────────────────────
Use the built-in F1 help to examine the commands. Select the top menu
options by activating them and then pressing F1. For example, press Alt+F
and then press F1 to see the help for File.
Also press F1 where indicated on the top line, to see a description of
the commands available for the current function.
10. Tutorial
──────────────────────────────────────
Print the file TUTORIAL.DOC for beginning help on using DeeP to create and
edit levels. It is also useful for persons new to DeeP, since it also
show how to use the commands. The file DEEPEXAM.WAD contains examples
of some of the predefined structures you can quickly create, from windows
to stairs.
The file textures are incorrect for HERETIC/HEXEN, but can be quickly
changed using the F10 fix missing textures feature.
11. DPMI DeeP and DeePBSP
──────────────────────────────────────
The DPMI versions of DeeP and DeePBSP require that you have HIMEM.SYS
installed in your CONFIG.SYS file. If you don't, it WON'T WORK. There are
further notes below. We wish it was simpler, but this is out of our control,
since we have to use the tools available at reasonable cost to us (Borland).
Your CONFIG.SYS file also requires a FILES=20 ( or more ) statement.
We do NOT have control when the program starts, so we can't tell you
what to do in the opening screen!
DeePBSP is an enhanced node builder that was made using information from
BSP 1.2, DEU 5.21 and the literature.
DeePBSP is about 20-50 times faster than BSP, can distinquish smaller
vertex spacing and features a display to see how your level is progressing
as it is being built.
In addition, DeePBSP can build nodes from within a grouped PWAD, so
DO NOT substitute another node builder, since it won't work right when
run by DeeP!!
DeePBSP is always run from within DeeP.
NOTE 1:
If the manner in which you build 2-sided objects is not correct, you may
get "floating" floors and barriers. These types of errors are not caught
by the error checker, since 2-sided LineDefs have too many valid
combinations. Basically, when you build an object, you should try to have
all the LineDef sidedefs (side1 or side2) all facing the same direction,
either all in or all out. Failure to follow this guideline, may introduce
node conflicts.
DeePBSP is automatically run by selecting "Yes" when asked whether you want
the nodes built or not.
DeePBSP COPIES the reject map "as is", so be sure to clear the reject area
with DeeP when requested (see F5 options for always prompting).
Experiment with the DeeP clear REJECT options (see File, Save with Build)
to see if you need to work with the REJECT to speed up your level.
(DeePBSP formerly was called TBSP. TBSP always clears the reject map.)
NOTE 2:
If you get an ATAN2 error or DOMAIN error, you forgot to run the total
check on the level and you have overlapping vertices or other errors in
your level.
YOU SHOULD TEST BUILDING NODES ON YOUR SYSTEM FIRST TO BE SURE IT WORKS!
DeePBSP works only with PWAD files created by DeeP.
12. DeeP and Windows <<<<<<< be sure to read this
────────────────
DeeP requires the programs 32RTM.EXE, DPMIVM.OVL, BGI32.DLL and
METWND08.DLL in the directory where DeeP was installed as well as the
.FNT files included.

If you run DeeP from within windows, SYSTEM.INI must have the following
line added (use DOS EDIT ) after the line [386Enh] (Change the
c:\DOOM2\DeeP to reflect the location where you installed the program).

13. DeeP and QEMM <<<<<<< be sure to read this
────────────────────────────────────
If you use QEMM, the QDPMI.SYS driver and the Borland RTM.EXE used by
DeeP do not work together. You will get an Exception = 000cH..etc.,
from QDPMI.
DEVICE=QDPMI.SYS
The program QDPMI.SYS is installed if you used the default config when
you installed QEMM.
Remove the DEVICE=QDPMI.SYS from the CONFIG.SYS file or make an alternate
boot setup that doesn't use this file.
You may not need QDPMI.SYS at all! Refer to QHINTS.DOC for information.
14. DeeP and OS/2
──────────────
DeeP works with the latest OS/2 Warp. DeeP is run from within the DOS
box environment of Windows. You set the same option as you do for
Windows 3.x. You do have to allocate at least 6MB to the DOS environment
or else the DPMI extender complains about not enough uncommitted memory!
15. DeeP and WIN95
──────────────
The DPMI support in WIN95 is not currently compatible if running in
Windows. If you "boot" to DOS 7.0 it all works fine. Check out the
AUTOEXEC.BAT the Windows 95 is using. It works better if you run a
SMARTDRV cache of around 512kb.
Here's how you do it:
Click on the Start button (lower left corner), then select Shutdown
and then Restart in DOS mode.
To have Windows 95 load a mouse driver, smartdrv and any other drivers
your might require, edit the DOSSTART.BAT file. Add the required
programs here.
16. Future stuff
──────────────────────────────────────
Moving right along, (did cut,paste,merge,undo, rotating stairs,
interactive tools, directory browse, project files, texture files,
PCX viewer, file browser, integrated control, 3D view, 3Dwalkthough,
texture drawing, and Merge from any file, import of PCX textures).
1. Someday be able to Add new textures (Quake is taking up time now)
2. Windows 95 compatible (working on it and almost done!).
3. A Quake version maybe, with the same style interface as now. The
3D view options can be used to see your level.
